Cheyenne's Story

Cheyenne is a bay BLM Mustang mare. Her freezemark is 06180039. She's broke to ride, leads, ties, and is on excellent behavior for the farrier.

She is very calm and can be ridden in a halter and bareback. She does need a confident rider who can make her go forward, otherwise she will plant her feet.  We do say that she is green under saddle and has no fancy buttons. She doesn’t neckrein, but responds well to direct rein. She prefers riding bitless, so either a halter/hackamore/sidepull would be best for her and she reacts very well to it. We think in the past she may have had some training, since she does know certain more advanced maneuvers like side passing, but she’ll need a refresher since she likely hasn’t used any of that knowledge in several years.

She is currently overweight. She's an extremely easy keeper. In her past life she received a few too many treats and alfalfa coupled with no exercise, so she blew up like a balloon. She is currently on an exercise program to help her lose weight. She is doing well and is steadily dropping the pounds.

In her ideal home, she would be worked consistently to help keep her in shape. A dry lot and grass hay would likely be ideal for her, unless a consistent work schedule is able to offset the grass intake of a pasture life. As mentioned, she’s an extremely easy keeper.

Update June 2020:

A comprehensive blood panel has been run to test for any possible issue that can be tested with the blood. The vet has confirmed that she does not have Cushing's disease and is not Insulin resistant (both concerns with overweight horses). Her thyroid was slightly low (normal to low range) and was put on a one month course of medications to raise it. Beyond her thyroid, Cheyenne checked out as healthy, according to her blood work.

With her exercise program, she has also lost 50+lb so far and is doing well.
